Exhibition hall for fresh vegetables opens in Mailiao

Taipei, Jan. 8 (CNA) An exhibition hall featuring fresh vegetables opened earlier this month in Mailiao Township as part of the Yunlin Agriculture Expo, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the merits of lettuce produced in the south-central country. Hsu Chung-fu, manager of the hall, said farmers in a village in Mailiao are committed to growing safe and certified lettuce that is "fresh, crisp and sweet." Mailiao lettuce, which is grown mainly for export to Japan and Singapore, accounts for more than 50 percent of Taiwan's lettuce exports, he added. Hsu said farmers in the area set up the hall to allow domestic consumers to taste dishes of lettuce grown in the village and gain a better understanding of the merits of such produce. The hall will be open to the public every Saturday and Sunday until March 6 when the Yunlin Agriculture Expo ends. On those weekends, there will be various activities such as vegetable salad tastings and performances by street artists, according to Hsu. (By Yeh Tzu-kang and Y.L. Kao)
