SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Authorities in Puerto Rico are preparing to detonate a 100-pound explosive found underwater near a small island popular with tourists.

Government officials said Tuesday that authorities will close Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra early Wednesday for the detonation. They said the explosive was found in late December some 200 feet (61 meters) from shore in about 15 feet (five meters) of water.

Flamenco Beach is considered the most popular beach in Culebra.

Officials said the explosive is 3 feet (one meter) long and dates from World War II.

The U.S. Navy once used Culebra for military activity and later moved operations to the nearby island of Vieques.
