Panda cub Yuan Zai draws thousands of fans to Taipei Zoo

Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) The Taipei Zoo's six-month-old panda Yuan Zai continued to attract large crowds of admirers seeking a close look at the cub Tuesday, one day after it was unveiled to the public for the first time. A total of 11,151 people flocked to the zoo to visit Yuan Zai, or Inn-a in the Taiwanese dialect, according to zoo spokesman Chao Ming-chieh. The young panda's debut on Monday drew 9,563 visitors. A queue began forming before the panda house opened at 9:10 a.m., as people did not want to miss the chance of seeing the cub in person. The number of visitors to the panda house is capped at 19,200 per day. Yuan Zai fell asleep shortly after the panda house was opened and did not become energetic until later in the afternoon, when she showed off her climbing skills to the delighted visitors in front of her enclosure. She also played with her mother, Yuan Yuan, for an hour before the panda house closed at 5:10 p.m. Meanwhile, many of the zoo visitors squeezed into the souvenir shop next to the enclosure to purchase life-size panda cub plush toys for NT$1,200 (US$40) apiece. Yuan Zai was born after four years of artificial insemination attempts, using sperm from the zoo's male panda, Tuan Tuan. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were given to Taiwan in late 2008 by China as a symbol of the warmer ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. (By Tai Ya-chen and Elaine Hou)
