THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) -- Authorities in Thessaloniki say an apartment fire apparently intentionally set by an elderly man killed him, his wife and two-year-old grandchild, and badly injured two more family members.
A fire brigade official says an initial investigation indicates that the grandfather poured gasoline around the 4th-floor apartment in the northern Greek city's Kordelio suburb and set it on fire Tuesday. Police said the 63-year-old man had been recently treated in a mental health hospital.
Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the full investigation is still under way.
Police say a 10-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man, both family members, were rescued by a plumber. The plumber, Theodoros Kaltsidis, tells The Associated Press he broke into the burning apartment through a balcony window because the door was firmly secured.
