MediaTek secures orders from Alcatel to ship octa-chips

Taipei, Jan. 7 (CNA) MediaTek Inc., one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit designers, said Tuesday that it has secured orders to provide its eight-core smartphone chips to smartphone brand Alcatel Onetouch. The IC designer said that with the use of the eight-core chip, coded MT6592, launched in November 2013, the new Acatel Onetouch Idol X+ model is expected to deliver greater performance during multi-tasking functions. The Acatel Onetouch Idol X+ equipped with the MT6592 chip will have better battery performance with a 40 percent reduction in battery usage for web browsing with Wi-Fi, and a 65 percent reduction in decoding full HD video compared to the quad-core platform. The new smartphone model will be introduced at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), scheduled to start in Las Vegas later in the day.
Acatel Onetouch is a brand owned by Hong Kong-listed TCL Communication Technology Holdings Ltd., which is part of China-based consumer electronics supplier TCL Corp. In addition to the Acatel Onetouch, aimed at the smartphone markets outside China, TCL also has a branch to target Chinese smartphone users. Market analysts said they are upbeat about the shipments of MediaTek's eight-core chips, adding that the IC designer is expected to ship about 5 million units in the first quarter of this year to offset the impact from slow-season effects seen in the quarter. They said that in the fourth quarter, MediaTek was estimated to ship about 1 million eight-core chips after the November launch, as part of the driving force to its consolidated sales for the October-December period. MediaTek is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter consolidated sales Wednesday and the market widely expects that the company will achieve its sales target ranging between NT$37.1 billion (US$1.24 billion) and NT$39.0 billion on strong demand from China. Despite the new orders from Alcatel Onetouch, shares of MediaTek fell 3.01 percent to close at NT$418.50 Tuesday after foreign institutional investors served as net sellers of 4.73 million IC designer shares.
