Bangladesh police detain 3 opposition officials

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- Police in Bangladesh say they have detained three opposition officials following a violent general election marred by street fighting, low turnout and an opposition boycott.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says her first priority after Sunday's election is containing violence with an "iron hand."

Police said they picked up Khandaker Muhbub Hossain, an adviser to opposition leader Khaleda Zia; and two other leading opposition members on Tuesday.

Political violence has convulsed Bangladesh as opposition activists staged attacks, strikes and transportation blockades to protest the government. Nearly 300 people have been killed since last February.
