Mayday, Jeannie Hsieh heat up New Year Eve's countdowns

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) Rock band Mayday and electropop diva Jeannie Hsieh were among the stars that launched New Year Eve's countdown parties in Taiwan Tuesday. Mayday opened the celebrations to screaming fans at Kaohsiung's Dream Mall in southern Taiwan with a 40-minute performance of their best-known songs such as "Crazy World" and "Embrace." In the north, Hsieh wore an eye-catching short red dress to give an energetic opening to the series of performances that make up Taipei 101 New Year's Eve Countdown, singing hit songs including "Sister." As of 8 p.m., close to 200,000 revelers had flooded the Taipei event, organizers said, while large crowds were being reported in countdown parties in other places across the country. Before the Taipei event formally began, crowds were treated to a 10-minute performance by the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra and members of the Armed Forces Honor Guard showing off their rifle-spinning and drumming skills. Trio S.H.E. will be the last to perform at the Taipei event, where they will give a one-hour performance featuring several of their most beloved songs. In Kaohsiung, Singaporean singer JJ Lin will lead up to the final seconds before the New Year countdown, while singer Elva Hsiao will be the last to take the stage at another major party at the city's E-Da World theme park. The new year will be ushered in with a bang at the stroke of midnight, with fireworks shows lighting up cities and counties across the country. (By Christie Chen and Elaine Hou)
