Investigators seize 20 kg of ketamine at Taiwan airport

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) seized 20 kilograms of ketamine that had been smuggled into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport from China on Dec. 28, a CIB spokesman said Tuesday. The drugs, with a street value of around NT$1 million (US$33,307), were disguised as teabags and packed in cargo container for transshipment to Kaohsiung City via express air service, the CIB said. Acting on information provided by China police, the CIB seized the 20-kg drug shipment and arrested a suspect, surnamed Lu, who was the intended recipient in Kaohsiung, the spokesman said. Lu admitted that he had smuggled about 100 kilograms of ketamine into Taiwan in December, using the same method, the CIB said. He has been referred to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors' Office, the bureau said. On the investigation trial, the bureau also raided an express delivery company and found another 4.7 kilograms of ketamine disguised as desiccants in a large package of tea bags, the spokesman said. The raids followed a recent case in which Chinese police in Guangdong seized 40 packets of ketamine hidden in a package of tea bags that was bound for Kaohsiung via express air parcel service. The police in China said they became suspicious and notified the CIB because similar products had been sent recently to the same recipient in Taiwan (By Liu Jian-bang and Y.L. Kao)
