LED TV shipments forecast to continue growth in 2014

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Worldwide shipments of light-emitting diode (LED) televisions will continue to grow in 2014 amid increasing popularity, according to a local market research firm.
Spurred by strong demand in China, the market penetration rate of LED TVs reached 95 percent this year, LEDinside said in a research note. It said LED TVs will completely replace cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) sets in 2014, with LED TV shipments growing by an annual 3 percent to 209 million units. LED application market value, however, is projected to decrease 17 percent to US$ 2.41 billion, according to the research firm.
The forecast for increased shipments but lower LED market application value is based on the fact that direct-type LED TVs use a relatively small number of LEDS, the firm said. Compared to edge-type LED TVs, direct-type LED TVs use only half the number of LEDs, according to LEDinside.
"For LED manufacturers, 2014 will be a price competitive year," said Jack Kuo, assistant manager at LEDinside. Even if the LED TV penetration rate reaches 100 percent, there are no signs that the TV industry's price and cost competition will ease, he added.
Direct-type LED TVs use LEDs with a higher wattage, and the number of LEDs used has been reduced to meet the continual target of lowering costs, Kuo said.
LED package manufacturers should now focus more on research and development to improve LED luminous efficacy, he said. (By James Lee)
