Taiwan in grip of cold front; poor air quality in center, south

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Taiwan was in the grip of a cold front Sunday as the mercury plunged to 9.9 degrees Celsius in Danshui, New Taipei in the early morning, with 10 degrees in Hsinchu and 10.1 degrees in Wuqi, Taichung, according to the Central Weather Bureau. In Chiayi, where the temperatures dipped Saturday to 6.2 degrees Celsius -- a record low for any plain area this year -- the mercury stood at 10.9 in the morning. Since the cold front won't ease until Monday, forecasters predicted temperatures between 14-15 degrees Celsius for northern Taiwan and 18-20 degrees for the rest of the island, adding that lower temperatures are possible for the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu. Occasional rain was forecast for northern, eastern and mountainous areas, while the northeast wind prevailing over the whole island may stir up dust and deteriorate the air quality in central and southern Taiwan, according to the Environmental Protection Administration. Noting that the concentration of ozone and suspended particulates in the air has surged to dangerous levels of 95-115 according to the pollutant standards index, the administration warned people to wear surgical masks and avoid outdoor activities.
