Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee elects new leader (update)

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee Vice President Lin Hung-dao was elected president of the organization Saturday. Lin will replace Thomas Tsai to lead the national Olympic committee. He is scheduled to assume office Dec. 31. "I will devote my every effort," he said after winning 56 out of the 61 votes cast in the election. Lin, vice chairman of the Hung Kuo business group, organized a Hung Kuo basketball team in 1989 to play in games held by the Chinese Basketball Alliance (CBA), a men's professional basketball league in Taiwan that existed from 1995 to 1999. One of the CBA's founders, Lin is recognized as the person who helped promote basketball in Taiwan to a new level. Speaking on his future work in his four-year post, Lin said he will continue to promote international and cross-Taiwan Strait interaction. "Sport is not the only function of the Olympic committee," he said when explaining the committee's role. On the committee platform, efforts can be made to raise Taiwan's sports quality and the country's visibility in the international community, Lin said. During Saturday's election, the committee also elected six new vice presidents. The new committee will begin operations Jan. 1. (By Lee Yu-cheng and Elizabeth Hsu)
