Shopping site lists top unconventional holiday gifts

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Unconventional gifts have drawn a peculiar amount of attention from online shoppers this holiday season, shopping website buy123 said Friday, adding that more and more consumers are showing a willingness to venture into the odd to find presents. Buy123 picked out six products "normally considered odd" that have seen rising sales since mid-December. The list includes a self-stirring mug; a ropeless jump-rope that can calculate calories burned; "double-eyelid" trainers, which claim to be able to produce the desired effect with no need for surgery; and a bring-your-own-bag miniature trash can that hangs off a desk. A toothpaste squeezer that turns regular tubes into wall-mounted dispensers and a small shield that attaches to cooking utensils to protect the hands from hot oil rounded out the list. "These products are novel and seem to be a lot of fun," said Darren Lin, the website's communications agent, who admitted he was surprised that they would prove popular. While they will not be challenging tablet computers or designer jewelry as the traditionally popular holiday gifts this year, the products had a respectable showing for the odd trinkets category, each selling over 300 units over the past two weeks. Launched in May, buy123 has about 3,000 orders of products per day, most of which are daily necessities and personal commodities. (By James Lee)
