European Education Fair to kick off this weekend

Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) The annual European Education Fair Taiwan will be held this weekend in Taipei, and in Kaohsiung on Oct. 28, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about the diverse educational environment in Europe. More than 100 universities and colleges from 11 European countries will participate in the three-day fair, with the majority from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. Frederic Laplanche, head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taipei, said diversity is a key point that attracts people to study in Europe, where international students can easily travel across the European Union's 28 member states and learn about the different languages. "The quality of the educational system in Europe is very high, and you can choose from among more than 3,000 universities there," Laplanche said at a pre-show press conference. Europe has "unlimited possibilities" to be explored, he added. In addition to offering information about undergraduate study, the fair will also feature the PromoDoc project, which is funded by the European Commission and focuses on the promotion of European higher education at the doctoral level. The project aims to facilitate access to European doctoral programs among foreign students, especially from the industrialized countries and territories of Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. At the fair, students hoping to work in European businesses will have an opportunity to participate in mock interviews and access career consulting services offered by the France Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the German Trade Office Taipei. The education fair, the biggest of its kind in Taiwan, is expected to attract 20,000 visitors, more than triple the number last year, according to the organizers. (By Jeffrey Wu)
