Rubber Duck ready for display in Taoyuan County

Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) The inflation of a giant Rubber Duck that amused visitors in Kaohsiung over the past month was completed Thursday in northern Taiwan's Taoyuan County after being postponed a day earlier due to inclement weather, according to county government officials. County government workers said the inflation went smoothly as the wind had abated. They spent 45 minutes blowing up the immense floating installation artwork. Unlike its earlier display at Kaohsiung harbor in southern Taiwan, the world-famous giant bath toy will be ensconced in the unique pond- dotted landscape of the county's Xinwu Township as part of a landscape festival to be held between Oct. 26 and Nov. 10. As a result, people can expect a different kind of viewing experience as they will see the duck in the context of coastal bike rides, tourist farms, fresh seafood restaurants and sunsets over the Taiwan Strait, according to Taoyuan's Tourism Promotion Bureau. The duck itself is also different from the one exhibited in Kaohsiung, although they are the same size and weight. The brainchild of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, each duck measures 18 meters high and weighs in at 1,000 kg, making them the second-biggest of his Rubber Duck series exhibited anywhere in the world. Taoyuan is expecting up to 1.5 million visitors to Xinwu during the duck's 15-day display period before it moves to northern Taiwan's Keelung City Dec. 21. (By Chiu Chun-ching and Maia Huang)
