Scientists lose Senegal hotels to ECOWAS forum

700 scientists left in the lurch after Senegalese government gives away their hotel

Scientists lose Senegal hotels to ECOWAS forum

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- About 700 scientists who had booked tickets to fly to Senegal this week for a conference on diseases were told days before their forum was to start that the hotel where they were to meet had been booked instead for a regional ECOWAS summit.

Gert Onne van de Klashorst, communications officer at the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership, said Wednesday the forum had been scheduled months ago and that organizers "deeply regret" its cancellation.

The forum was to be held at the King Fahd Hotel, the largest in Dakar which is the venue-of-choice for visiting heads of state.

Senegalese government spokesman Abdou Latif Coulibaly said ministers were informed of the venue change three months ago, but that he does not know why forum organizers weren't told earlier.
