High winds delay Rubber Duck's appearance in Taoyuan

Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) Tests to inflate a giant Rubber Duck in Taoyuan County were postponed Wednesday for the second time this week due to inclement weather, according to county government officials. The immense sculpture in the shape of a bath toy was scheduled to be inflated Tuesday afternoon in Xinwu Township in northern Taiwan but the tests were delayed until about 5 a.m. Wednesday and again until Thursday due to gusty northeasterly seasonal winds, the officials said. They said an assessment will be made Thursday to decide whether the tests can proceed. The world-famous floating sculpture, which had been attracting crowds in Kaohsiung for the past month, will be a central part of a landscape festival in Taoyuan, where it will be on display on a pond Oct. 26 to Nov. 10. The temporary home of the Rubber Duck in Taoyuan will be in a more rural setting than Kaohsiung Harbor in southern Taiwan, where it attracted some 3.9 million visitors between Sept. 19 and Oct. 20. Taoyuan is expecting up to 1.5 million visitors to Xinwu during the 15-day period that the giant duck will be there, tourism officials said. (By Chiu Chun-chin and Jeffrey Wu)
