Tested cottonseed oil products found to be free of gossypol

Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) Three cottonseed oil products that were tested for gossypol have been found to be free of the toxic substance, health authorities said Wednesday. The results of the tests on products by two local edible oil producers involved in a recent food scandal showed that one product from Chang Chi Foodstuff Factory Co., which was found to have been adding illegal additives to its oil products and selling expensive oil adulterated with much cheaper cottonseed oil, was free of gossypol. Two cottonseed oil products by Flavor Full Food Inc., another firm caught up in the scandal, also did not contain gossypol, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Gossypol is a toxic substance that is present in crude cottonseed oil but is removed during the refining process. (By Lung Rui-yun and Scully Hsiao)
