Moroccan editor appears in court on terror charges

SALE, Morocco (AP) -- The editor of a leading Moroccan news website had his first day in court before an investigative judge on charges of abetting terrorism after writing about an al-Qaida video.

Defense lawyer Hassan Semlali said the judge questioned his client, Ali Anouzla, behind closed doors on Tuesday but did not respond to requests to release him on bail.

After several hours the sessions was adjourned until Wednesday.

Anouzla was charged last month for advocating terrorism and providing assistance to terrorists after writing about an al-Qaida video critical of Morocco.

The case has drawn widespread condemnation from local and international freedom of the press advocates criticizing the use of anti-terrorism legislation against journalists.

Anouzla's site was known for its well-researched and trenchant critiques of the government and monarchy.
