Marianas Islands to hire Taiwanese intern for travel promotion (update)

Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) The Marianas Visitors Authority celebrated the opening of its representative office in Taiwan on Tuesday by launching a campaign to choose a tourism ambassador for the United States commonwealth in Taiwan. The winner of the "Intern to Marianas" campaign will be paid NT$60,000 (US$2,000) to travel around the Northern Mariana Islands for a week and receive training as a tour guide, the office said. The training will involve a tour of several attractions in the West Pacific island chain, including the path of the annual Saipan Marathon, World War II relics on the island of Tinian, and the natural swimming hole on the island of Rota. The intern will then become the authority's tourism ambassador in Taiwan, participating in local activities or seminars to promote tourism in the Marianas, a chain of islands about 2,750 kilometers southeast of Taiwan, officials said. The Marianas hope that the campaign will revive interest in the island chain there, said Perry Tenorio, the authority's managing director. "We want to see Taiwan become part of our market base," Tenorio said, adding that Taiwan is the fourth East Asian country in which the authority had established a representative office, after Japan, Korea and China. Taiwan used to be an important source of visitors to the islands, with around 10,000 Taiwanese tourists visiting the islands per year in the early 1990s, Tenorio said. But the number has dropped significantly over the past decade, falling to around 400 last year. Tenorio said the goal of the commonwealth's office in Taiwan is to restore the flow of Taiwanese visitors to levels seen in the 1990s. The campaign, which will run through Jan. 14, 2014, will be open to all Republic of China nationals aged 18 or older, according to the office. Candidates are required to send their resumes to the office by Nov. 30 via e-mail, which should contain a self-introduction in both video and print formats. A shortlist of 14 candidates will be selected Dec. 1 after review by the committee that comprises the authority and tourism representatives from other countries. The candidates' video work will then be put online throughout December for public votes. Three finalists will be chosen Dec. 31, who will be interviewed by the authority Jan. 14, with the winner announced immediately afterward. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
