TransAsia launches direct flights to Tokyo

Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) TransAsia Airways, one of Taiwan's smaller carriers, launched direct flights between Taipei and Tokyo Thursday to meet rising demand for travel to Japan. The market seems promising, as travel exchanges between Taiwan and Japan have climbed to an all-time high, said TransAsia Airways Chairman Lin Ming-sheng. About 1.36 million Taiwanese travelers visited Japan between January and July, a 52 percent year-on-year increase, according to Lin. Twenty percent of Taiwanese who travel to foreign countries choose Japan as their destination, a momentum TransAsia hopes to capitalize on, he said. The new route between Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport and Narita Airport in Tokyo is also important for the carrier's market strategy in Japan following its extensive flight services to areas such as Hokkaido and western Japan, Lin said. TransAsia said it will operate one daily round trip flight to Tokyo using Airbus A320 or A321 jets, while a bigger A330 is possible in the future depending on market demand.
