Russian wheelchair dancers shine in DanceSport Games

Kaohsiung, Sept. 19 (CNA) Dancers from Russia dominated the Wheelchair event at the first-ever World DanceSport Games in Kaohsiung Thursday, with the world's top ranking teams from the country taking the gold and silver medals. Viacheslav Osipov and parnter Galina Ryzhkova, who rank second worldwide for combi Latin class 2, won the first place, followed by compatriots Sergey Antonov and Olga Beliaeva, who are third worldwide. Korea's Lee Youngho and Lee Eunji placed in third at the event. A total of 12 teams from 10 countries competed in the category, which gives dancers with physically debilitating conditions a chance to take the stage. The Wheelchair event was valuable practice for Taiwanese duos Chu Hsiung-sheng/Chen Peng-yu and Kao Sheng-tsun/Wu Chiao-lu, though they were ultimately ousted at the event. They will however get another chance to show their moves at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Wheelchair dance was developed after the Second World War and is listed as an official event of the Asian Para Games. Friday will be the last day of the DanceSport Games, which opened Monday. The event will be end with much-anticipated Hip Hop and Latin categories before closing ceremonies punctuated by traditional Taiwanese performances. (By Wang Shwu-fen and Maia Huang)
