Caution: lanes closed for spawning crabs

Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) Traffic on a highway in Pingtung County will face restrictions in the next few months to allow for the crossing of land crabs in the Kenting National Park to their coastal spawning grounds, the park's administration said Thursday. Two of the four lanes on a section of Provincial Highway No. 26 will be closed for three days around full moon in the months of August, September and October, the peak spawning season for the land crabs, the park said. This will allow safer passage for the crabs, as they migrate from inland areas to their coastal spawning grounds near Banana Bay in southern Taiwan, the park said. The measure has been taken in recent years to reduce the chances of the crabs being crushed by cars and motorcycles on the highway, which passes through the popular tourist destination of Kenting, according to the park. Taiwan has been taking a similar action to protect its purple crow butterflies in Yunlin County. From late March to early April, a section of National Freeway No. 3 is closed to allow the annual migration of the butterfly species from the southern city of Kaohsiung to Miaoli County in the north. The highway section is usually closed when the migration reaches a peak of 300 purple crow butterflies per minute across that section of the highway. (By Kuo Chih-hsuan and Elaine Hou)
