High-profile economic fugitive to be repatriated from China

Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) Taiwanese fugitive Chou Wu-hsien will be repatriated Thursday night from China, where he has been on the run for three years, Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA) said earlier in the day. The 60-year-old, who has been charged with economic crimes, will be escorted back by Taiwanese law enforcement personnel, the agency said. Chou, the chairman of Airlux Electrical Co., fled Taiwan in 2010, after he and a co-conspirator spread false information about the company's profits to manipulate stock prices illegally, the NIA said. They managed to pocket more than NT$300 million (US$10) in illicit gains from the stock surge, it said. Co-conspirator Chang Shih-chieh was arrested trying to leave the country and later sentenced to nine years in prison, but Chou managed to escape to China. The NIA provided information on the case to China's public security agencies, which began investigating in February of this year, eventually leading to Chou's arrest in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, the agency said. NIA Director-General Hsieh Li-kung said that his agency will continue to work alongside China in their joint crime-fighting effort. (By Christie Chen)
