LIMA, Peru (AP) -- Peruvian police say the two young women -- an Irish and a British citizen -- arrested last week at Lima's airport trying to smuggle 24 pounds (11 kilos) of cocaine to Madrid have not yet been formally questioned for lack of a translator.
A senior police official told reporters Wednesday that questioning will likely occur in the next few days. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the case.
Twenty-year-old Michaella McCollum Connolly and 19-year-old Melissa Reid were among 11 foreigners being for alleged drug-smuggling at a Lima police lockup.
In all, 1,648 foreigners are in Peruvian prison on drug charges, 31 of them British. If low-level smugglers plead guilty they normally get six-year sentences and can be out in two years.
