Thousands of Scotland fans descend on London

LONDON (AP) -- Wearing traditional kilts and bonnets, thousands of Scotland fans have descended on London's Trafalgar Square ahead of their country's first game against neighbor and fierce rival England in 14 years.

Police officers kept their distance as fans drank beer and plastered pro-Scottish independence signs on monuments in the square.

Wednesday's match at Wembley Stadium comes 13 months before Scotland stages a referendum on whether to break away from the United Kingdom after more than 300 years of political union with England.

England and Scotland, the oldest rivals in international football, were forced to scrap their annual friendly matches in 1989 due to hooliganism.

The only matches between the neighbors since then have been because they were drawn to face each other in official competitions.
