President arrives in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Aug. 13 (CNA) Republic of China President Ma Ying-jeou arrived Tuesday in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, one of Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the Caribbean. Ma was greeted by Haitian President Michel Martelly, Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and other Haitian officials at the airport. The president was en route to Paraguay, the ROC's only diplomatic ally in South America, to attend the Aug. 15 inauguration of Paraguay President-elect Horacio Cartes. Ma will also visit St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, all of which are also ROC allies. The state trip to Haiti is of particular note, as it is the first time an ROC president has visited since the nations established diplomatic relations 57 years ago. Ma is scheduled to hold talks with Martelly at Haiti's presidential office to gain an understanding of the reconstruction work in Haiti after a devastating earthquake that struck the Caribbean country in 2010, including Taiwan's achievements in assisting with such work.
