1 Taiwanese tourist dies, up to 9 injured in bus crash in Norway

Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) One Taiwanese died and two others suffered severe injuries when the bus carrying their 23-member tour group crashed in Norway on Monday, government agencies in Taiwan confirmed Tuesday. The vehicle carrying the Taiwanese group collided with a local bus while traveling in Sogndal, western Norway, on Monday afternoon Norway time, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Anna Kao told a news conference. A 26-year-old Taiwanese woman identified as Lin Wen-ling lost her life in the collision, the Tourism Bureau said. A Norwegian woman was also killed in the accident. The two members of the group who were seriously injured were sent to be treated in a hospital in Bergen, and their condition was not immediately known, Kao said. She said an official with Taiwan's representative office in Norway would visit them later Tuesday and help take care of them. The Tourism Bureau also said five other members of the tour group suffered minor injuries, while the Foreign Ministry put the number at seven. Kao said they were being treated at hospitals in Sogndal and Forde. "The local police are investigating the cause of the crash," Kao said. Taipei-based Artisan Tour, which organized the Aug. 8-20 trip, said it had arranged for the family of the deceased passenger to go to Norway and was checking if other relatives of those in the tour group wanted to go there as well to be with their loved ones. Kao said that if needed, her ministry would also help arrange visits by families of the injured passengers to Norway. (By Elaine Hou and Lee Hsin-Yin)
