BEIJING (AP) -- A Chinese lawyer says the family of the British businessman who was murdered by a powerful politician's wife is seeking compensation from his killer.
Beijing attorney Li Xiaolin said Tuesday that lawyers representing Neil Heywood's family have met with lawyers for Gu Kailai, the jailed wife of the former Communist Party leader in megacity of Chongqing, to ask for compensation.
The spokesman for the British Embassy, John Gallagher, says British officials have raised the issue of compensation with the Chinese Foreign Ministry on several occasions, most recently last month.
Heywood's murder was at the center of China's most embarrassing political scandal in decades that saw Gu's husband, Bo Xilai, expelled from the Politburo.
Last year, Gu was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to poisoning Heywood with cyanide.
