RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Brazilian news reports say 59 inmates have escaped from a youth detention facility in Sao Paulo following a riot in which dozens of staffers were taken hostage and the director injured.
The G1 website of the Globo television network says the riot broke out at the Fundacao Casa early Monday as some of the facility's 103 detainees attempted to break out. Helicopter images showed stacks of mattresses burning and a cloud of smoke billowing from the facility.
Around 29 staff members were held hostage for a time, and the facility's director was taken to a hospital in serious condition with cuts to the head and bruised ribs.
A separate uprising Monday at another Sao Paulo branch of the youth facility was brought under control after 12 hostages were released.
