Army Gen. Yen Teh-fa named vice defense minister

Taipei, Aug. 9 (CNA) Army General Yen Teh-fa, an executive deputy chief of the General Staff, was named Vice Minister of National Defense for Armaments, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Friday. A 1975-class graduate of the Military Academy, Yen later attended the War College of the National Defense University and served as chief of staff and deputy commander of the Army. Yen took over the post vacated by Adm. Kao Kuang-chi, who assumed office as Chief of the General Staff Thursday as part of a reshuffle of senior defense officials triggered by the departure of Kao Hua-chu as defense minister on August 1. Kao's successor Andrew Yang resigned after only six days on the job and was replaced by Yen Ming, chief of the General Staff. (By Chen Pei-huang and Maia Huang)
