Turkey debates alcohol restrictions

Turkey's parliament has begun debating a contentious draft bill which would ban all alcohol advertising and tighten restrictions on sales in the mainly Muslim country.
The government insists the proposed legislation is aimed at protecting the young from the ills of alcohol but secularist opponents accuse the Islamic-based ruling party of gradually imposing an Islamic agenda.
Legislators began debating the bill on Thursday. If passed, it would bar the sale of alcohol close to mosques and educational centers, which could lead to the cancellation of hundreds of establishments' alcohol licenses.
The proposal would also bar all alcohol advertisements while drink companies would not be allowed to promote their products.
The bill also foresees stricter penalties on drunk driving.
