Famed author donates meals after rumor of Filipino humiliation

Taipei, May 24 (CNA) Popular Taiwanese author Giddens Ko on Friday fulfilled his pledge to donate 700 boxed meals to the needy after it was reported that a Filipino had been denied service at a Taipei cafeteria, although it was later proved to be just a rumor. Ko has paid for 700 boxed meals at a cafeteria in Jhonghe District, New Taipei, at a price of NT$80 (US$2.67) each, under a "reserved meal" model that allows donors to pay in advance for meals that are later claimed by people in need. The author has specified that the meals should be distributed from May 24 to June 8, in the form of 25 lunches or dinners for 14 consecutive days. Ko made a pledge to buy 700 reserved meals after a 38-year-old woman, identified as Grace Tung, said in a May 15 Facebook post that she had bought lunch for a Filipino worker who had been denied service at a cafeteria and had been standing outside for an hour. At the time, Ko questioned the accuracy of the information but said would buy 700 boxed meals for the homeless and the less affluent, if the cafeteria's food was so good that someone would wait an hour even after being humiliated. Earlier this week, Tung confessed that she had only heard of the situation, but she wrote the story as if she had witnessed it. Although the rumor proved to be untrue, Ko said, he wanted to donate the meals to "give the incident a heartwarming ending." Ko went Friday to the cafeteria, where people were lined up for the first 25 boxed lunches. Some of the people in line asked to take pictures with him. The first person in line, a man from New Taipei's Nanshijiao, said he had been waiting since 9:30 a.m. and he thanked Ko, known by the pen name Jiubadao, for his kindness. Ko rose to fame after his semi-autobiographical novel and movie "You are the Apple of My Eye" scored big successes. (By Hsu Hui, Sabine Cheng, Wang Hung-kuo and Jamie Wang)
