Turks and Caicos recovers cash, land amid probe

Officials in the Turks and Caicos Islands have recovered $19.5 million and more than 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) of prized real estate as they seize assets improperly obtained by corrupt politicians.
Thursday's announcement comes six months after the territory began to govern itself for the first time in three years following direct rule imposed by Britain due to a corruption scandal.
Officials say the amount of cash and property seized is expected to increase as courts rule on additional cases involving millions of dollars and more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land.
The money is being used to help balance the budget, while the land is being returned to the government of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a popular tourist destination and financial haven that lies southeast of Miami.
