Tourism Bureau launches Taiwan promotion campaign in Hawaii

Los Angeles, May 22 (CNA) Taiwan's Tourism Bureau launched a campaign in Hawaii Wednesday to promote the country's summer landscape, particularly around the Tropic of Cancer, which bisects the island. According to the bureau, Taiwan, like Hawaii, is one of 16 countries in the world bisected by the Tropic of Cancer at latitude 23.5 degrees north. The bureau said it was for this reason it chose Hawaii for the launch of the tourism campaign, which is aimed at stirring up interest among U.S. tourists to visit Taiwan. 2013 is the first year in which Taiwan has tried to boost its international visibility related to summer travel as the peak tourism season approaches, the bureau said. The campaign features the theme of "Taiwan Fun on the Tropic of Cancer" and has a special numeric code -- 235 -- which in Mandarin pronunciation sounds like "fall in love with me," meaning "fall in love with Taiwan." Lin Hsin-jen, section chief of the bureau's representative office in Los Angeles, said that due to Taiwan's location on the Tropic of Cancer, it embraces both tropical and sub-tropical climates, from which have developed a wide range of cultural characteristics. Lin said that during the summer, several places in the vicinity of the Tropic of Cancer in Taiwan will host a series of activities catering to tourists, such as canoeing in Penghu, sailing in Chiayi, a marathon to scale Alishan, mountain climbing on Yushan -- the country's highest peak -- and rafting in Hualien. He also noted that the summer travel activities will introduce local food specialties such as smoked flying fish, cactus sorbet and mango shaved ice, to foreign guests.
