Smartphones forecast to take half local market by year-end

Taipei, May 23 (CNA) Nearly half of Taiwanese cellphone users will be using smartphones by the end of 2013, according to a local branch of market research firm GfK Group. The handheld devices have been all the rage worldwide over the past two years and have become one of the most important technological consumer electronics products in Taiwan, GfK said in a research note Wednesday. Smartphone sales in Taiwan are expected to reach 7.3 million units in 2013, up nearly 30 percent from 5.65 million units last year, GfK forecast. Over 1.9 million smartphones were sold in Taiwan in the first quarter of this year, much higher than the average quarterly figure of 1.4 million units, the research note said. With launches of new products, including flagship models and medium- and low-end ones, the fast growth of smartphones is likely to continue throughout the year, the report said. (By James Lee)
