Donations reach families of fishermen killed in Philippine patrols

Taipei, May 22 (CNA) Members of the overseas Chinese community in the Philippines on Wednesday offered a total of NT$5 million in donations to the families of two Taiwanese fishermen who were shot dead by Philippine marine patrol personnel over the past seven years. The donations, split evenly, were delivered by Jose Kho, chairman of the Hong Kong-based Friends of the Philippines Foundation, during visits to the bereaved families in Pingtung County. One of the victims was Hung Shih-cheng, who died after his boat was strafed by a Philippine government vessel while operating in waters south of Taiwan where the two countries' exclusive economic zones overlap. The other was Chen An-lao, who was killed in a similar incident near Batanes in 2006. Chen's widow, Cheng Wen-tzu, expressed gratitude to Kho for the NT$2.5 million donation, saying it was the largest amount donated to the family since the death of her husband. Chen's daughter, Chen Hsing-lan, said her family suffered a heavy financial blow with the death of her father and a severe injury suffered by her uncle in the 2006 shooting incident but they did not receive any assistance from the government except for NT$50,000 as a condolence fund. Hung's family, however, declined to accept the donation, saying all they want is an official apology from the Philippine government. Kho later accept an alternative suggestion by former Legislator Chiu Yi, who accompanied him to Pingtung, to put the money instead into an accident relief fund set up by the National Fishermen's Association. Kho said his foundation comprises more than 30 overseas Chinese businessmen operating in the Philippines. He said he and several other overseas Chinese had received help from Taiwanese fishing boats during typhoons in the Philippines and that they are trying to reciprocate in the spirit of humanitarianism.
