Agricultural losses from rain top NT$100 million

Taipei, May 22 (CNA) Taiwan's agricultural sector has suffered NT$126.7 million in losses as of Wednesday morning from heavy rains that have drenched the island over the past week, according to the Council of Agriculture. The figure includes NT$99.42 million in crop losses, primarily in Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City, and NT$20,000 in losses on both livestock farms and in forests. Losses from facility damage have totaled NT$3.22 million to date, with NT$3 million worth of damage done to farmland and farm facilities and NT$220,000 worth of damage done to livestock facilities. Also Wednesday, the Directorate General of Highways urged users of the scenic Alishan Highway to beware of rocks falling from slopes, made more likely by the excess moisture in the soil following days of rain.
