Mirage jets join drill off Philippines

Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The Republic of China Air Force sent two Mirage 2000-5 jet fighters to take part in an exercise in waters south of Taiwan Thursday. The exercise, which also involves the Navy and the Coast Guard Administration, is part of the country's efforts to better protect Taiwanese fishermen operating in the area amid escalating tension with the Philippines over the May 9 fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by a Philippine government vessel. The two Mirage fighters from the Air Force's 499 Wing took off from an Air Force base in Hsinchu in northern Taiwan amid drizzling rain. An Air Force official said the jets would fly to near the 20 degrees north latitude to join the exercise with the naval vessels and the coast guard patrol boats. (By Lin Jui-yi and Sofia Wu)
