China's Taiwan policy unlikely to change: TAITRA head

Beijing, May 7 (CNA) The head of Taiwan's top trade promotion body said Tuesday that China's Taiwan policy is likely to continue to focus on the development of economic ties and is unlikely to change in the short term. Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Chairman Wang Chih-kang made the remarks after visiting China's Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng and Chen Deming, president of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, in Beijing Tuesday. Chen, a former minister of commerce, succeeded Chen Yunlin as China's top negotiator with Taiwan in April this year. Wang said that judging from the strong financial backgrounds of the Chinese officials who handle Taiwan affairs, it is likely that China believes there is still room for closer economic ties between the two sides. He stressed that the opinions are his own. (By Chou Hui-ying and Ann Chen)
