Taiwanese investment in Southeast Asia increasing: researcher

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Investment by Taiwanese businessmen in Southeast Asia has been increasing over the past few years, a researcher at the Taipei-based Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research said Tuesday.
Kristy Hsu, head of the institution's Taiwan Association of Southeast Asian Nations Studies Center, said Taiwanese businessmen turned their attention to China after investment from Taiwan in Southeast Asia peaked in the 1990s. However, the flow of Taiwanese investment has re-appeared in the region in recent years, while some has also returned to Taiwan. Taiwanese have been engaged in investment in emerging countries and emerging market sectors, and Myanmar has become a poplar investment destination since last year, Hsu said at a seminar on global business plans and strategies for Taiwanese businessmen. In the last two years, many Taiwanese businessmen have visited Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines to seek investment opportunities, while investment through companies based in third locations has also increased, she said.
Hsu said that although direct trade and investment between Taiwan and Myanmar is still banned, Taiwanese investment in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, will increase rapidly in the near future, after several large-cap corporations in Europe and the U.S. have repeatedly urged their clients to set up production facilities in Myanmar. Hsu said there will be a few important investment projects by Taiwanese people in Myanmar in the second half this year, most of them in traditional industries. Although most Taiwanese businessmen still focus their capital on traditional industries, the service sector has also emerged as a popular investment choice, she added. The flow of overseas Taiwanese investment dropped rapidly in 2008 and 2009 during the global economic slowdown and rebounded quickly in 2011. However, Taiwanese investment in China has been decreasing since a record high in 2010, she said. Hsu said foreign investment by Taiwanese businessmen set a new high in 2012, totaling more than US$20 billion, US$12 billion of which was invested in China. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Jamie Wang)
