Openers Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford guided New Zealand to 79-1 at lunch Friday on the first day of the third test after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bowl.
Fulton was 41 not out but Rutherford fell for 37 three minutes from the interval, caught by Cook at second slip from the bowling of Steve Finn.
The team winning the toss has bowled first in all three matches in the series. New Zealand dismissed England for 167, bowling first in the first test at Dunedin but the decision to bowl backfired in the second test when England made 465 in its first innings.
James Anderson and Stuart Broad shared the new ball Friday, with Finn making the only breakthrough after being relegated to first change.
