US agency rejects cancer-Navy link in Vieques

A U.S. agency has issued a long-awaited report saying it did not find any proof that decades of military activity on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques had sickened residents who blame the federal government for high rates of cancer, asthma and other illnesses.
The report released this week follows four previous assessments and several updates by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry that reached similar conclusions.
The most recent report angered people in Vieques and local government officials who vowed on Thursday to keep pushing the U.S. government to create, implement and fund additional studies to analyze the impact of previous Navy activity.
The agency said a higher mortality rate especially from cancer could be partly blamed on a lack of access to adequate medical care.
