Cloud seeding planned for Sunday

Taipei, March 21 (CNA) Taiwan may use cloud seeding to generate rain starting Sunday amid an extended dry spell throughout the country, a water resources official said Thursday, after one operation planned for later that day was canceled. The procedure to induce rain may be carried out Sunday at the earliest at several reservoirs, upon the arrival of a weather front over Taiwan, said Tien Chiao-ling, deputy head of the Water Resources Agency. The one planned for Thursday has been canceled due to unsuitable weather conditions. As a first-stage water conservation measure, nighttime water pressure will be lowered in the southern city of Kaohsiung Friday. So far, New Taipei's Linkou District and the northern counties of Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli have all introduced similar measures. Water conservation has taken on added urgency due to below-average precipitation since the beginning of this year. Another factor is that last year's typhoon season, a primary source of rain for Taiwan, ended earlier than usual. Rainfall in Shihmen Reservoir in northern Taiwan in January was estimated to be only 50 percent of its monthly average while rainfall so far collected there since February was put at 10 percent of the average for the same period, official data showed. In the southern areas of Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung, rainfall in January and February was only 20 percent of the normal average recorded in previous years, according to the data. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is expected to call a meeting on responses to the dry spell on March 27. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Scully Hsiao)
