UN envoy back in Morocco seeking Sahara solution

A top U.N. envoy says it is even more urgent to reach a solution to the longstanding dispute over the Western Sahara region due to the situation in the nearby Sahel, where French forces have engaged Islamic militants.
Former U.S. ambassador Christopher Ross met Thursday with Moroccan Foreign Minister Saadeddine el-Othmani to restart stalled negotiations over the future of the territory that was annexed by Morocco in 1975.
Peace talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which is fighting Morocco for independence, were broken off in November after nine rounds. In May, Morocco said it no longer wanted Ross as an envoy, maintaining he lacked impartiality, but the U.N. declined to replace the veteran diplomat.
The UN is worried that Islamic militants could move into the sparsely populated former Spanish colony.
