Taiwan, China to discuss reciprocal offices in next round of talks

Taipei, March 21 (CNA) Taiwan and China announced Thursday that their respective semi-official bodies in charge of bilateral relations have agreed to discuss the matter of reciprocal offices in their next round of negotiations. It has been agreed that the proposal will be put on the agenda of the next round of talks between Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) and China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), according to the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's top body in charge of China policy. China's state-run Xinhua News Agency also issued similar information the same day, citing the ARATS. The SEF, meanwhile, said that although the date for the next round of talks has not yet been decided, it would like to finalize the negotiations on the exchange of offices by the end of this year. The SEF and ARATS are semi-official bodies assigned to deal with cross-Taiwan Strait affairs in the absence of formal bilateral relations The two sides have negotiated issues ranging from economics, culture, and education to cross-strait emergency measures, according to the MAC. The proposed reciprocal offices will be established under the principles of "equality, dignity, safety and convenience," the MAC said. (By Chen Hung-chin and Ann Chen)
