New Taipei city council demands halt to No. 4 nuke project

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) The New Taipei City Council approved Wednesday a proposal by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP's) caucus calling for an immediate halt to the construction of the controversial fourth nuclear power plant. The proposal, under which the city council will ask the central government to stop building the nuclear power plant, won the endorsement of some independent and ruling Kuomintang members of the city council, Shen Fa-huei of the DPP caucus said. It means having the controversial nuclear project scrapped has become a mainstream public opinion, he said. The planned fourth nuclear power plant falls in New Taipei, which is already home to two of three running nuclear power plants on the island. (By Wang Hung-kuo and Elizabeth Hsu)
