Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain meets the fans ahead of Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wednesday, March 20, 20...

Despite a surprisingly strong finish at the Australia Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes isn't ready to challenge rivals Red Bull and Ferrari for the overall Formula One title.
Hamilton told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his fifth-place finish in Melbourne was "a good step for us" considering the team was at times two seconds behind the leaders a year ago. The 28-year-old Briton also said this week's Malaysian Grand Prix will be a better gauge of "where we stand," and that he hopes to have sorted out the under steering problems that plagued him in Melbourne.
After switching from McLaren to Mercedes in the offseason, Hamilton says the team is "definitely not" ready to challenge for the drivers' title this season but will eventually be a contender.
