Taiwanese men arrested in Australia for drug smuggling

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Two Taiwanese men were recently arrested in Australia for alleged drug smuggling upon their arrival at Sydney Airport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Wednesday. The men, who had traveled from Thailand, are still in detention, said Chou Yin-hwou, deputy director-general of the ministry's Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. An official at Taiwan's representative office in Australia has also met with the Taiwanese nationals, who are aged around 40, and has offered to help them hire lawyers, Chou told local media. Chou made the remarks in the wake of a March 14 joint press statement released by the Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. The two men appeared in Sydney Central Local Court March 14, charged with smuggling approximately four kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia concealed in shipments of handbags, the statement said.
