Record inbound, outbound travel over Lunar New Year

Taipei, Feb. 16 (CNA) Travelers to and from Taiwan reached a record high in the first eight days of the Lunar New Year holiday period, the National Immigration Agency said Saturday. More than 938,000 people either entered or left the country between Feb. 8 and Feb. 15, close to a 10 percent growth from the same period of last year, according to figures released by the agency. The average number of travelers also exceeded 100,000 each day over the period, with the highest single-day figure of 138,053 recorded Feb. 15, said Lin Hung-chieh, an official with the agency's Border Affairs Corps. He estimated that traveler numbers could reach new highs in the last two days of the holiday, which ends Feb. 17. The agency said it has deployed extra staff at the airport to ensure safe and speedy immigration clearance. (By Liu Chien-pang and Christie Chen)
