Taiwan eyeing business opportunities in Middle East

Taipei, Jan. 22 (CNA) Foreign Minister David Lin expressed hope Tuesday that Taiwan's top envoy to Bahrain can help expand business opportunities and ties with the Middle East. Lin said at the swearing-in ceremony of Paul Y.F. Hsu that he hopes the envoy can help expand Taiwan's influence in the Middle East market. Prior to his swearing-in, Hsu served as Taiwan's representative to Bahrain, but the post was upgraded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the rank of ambassador, signifying the greater importance Taiwan attaches to the region. The Taiwan External Trade Development Council, Taiwan's top trade promotion body, has also recently established an office in Kuwait, which will be of further benefit to Taiwan's trade in the region, Lin noted. Taiwan currently cooperates with Bahrain on medical care and trade, with the Taipei City Hospital providing medical services to the country, according to the ministry. In related news, Ho Teng-huang, Taiwan's newly appointed director of the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was also sworn in at the same ceremony, as part of a personnel reshuffle at the ministry.
